Seven AI models shipped in a week. "Best model" stopped being the point.

In one week this month, seven notable AI models shipped. The real lesson isn't "AI is fast" — it's that picking the "best" one stopped being the point.
Between roughly July 17–23, five vendors shipped seven models: Moonshot's Kimi K3, three Qwen releases inside 72 hours, Google's Gemini 3.6 Flash trio, poolside's Laguna S 2.1, and Ant's Ling-3.0-flash — with Black Forest Labs teasing FLUX 3 on top.
Why it matters: When this many models are this capable, "which is smartest" matters less than "which fits." Price, speed, context window, and access now decide as much as raw benchmark scores. The race is shifting from best-model-wins to best-fit-wins.
Try it: pick by the job. Cheap-and-fast for high volume, big-context for long documents, top-tier reasoning only when you actually need it. Defaulting to the flagship for everything mostly means overpaying.
The flood isn't slowing down. Your filter is now the skill.
